Commission & Councils

The State Library is governed by the seven-member State Library Commission. Staff and the Commission seek advice from a number of standing advisory councils and ad hoc task forces on issues of importance to the communities we serve.

MSL Commission

The State Library Commission sets forth policies and funding priorities that empower the State Library to meet its mission and statutory obligations.

MGIAC

The Montana Geospatial Information Advisory Council (MGIAC), as required by statute, advises the State Librarian and the State Library Commission on issues related to geospatial information.

Federations

Montana is divided up into six regions. Libraries within those regions have formed a federation. It's a formal and informal way to network and improve library services in Montana.

Past Committees

NAC

The Network Advisory Council (NAC) represented the interests of all types of Montana libraries and maintained the perspective of statewide geographical balance as it explored ways to help libraries.

2023 PLSTF

The charge of the 2023 Public Library Standards Task
Force was to review administrative rules and present options for the Montana State Library Commission.

Federation Task Force

MSL studied the structure and purpose of current federations to make sure that the legislative intent created when federations were established is still valid.
